Obituary for Donald Harold Dunn, Sr.

Donald Harold Dunn, Sr. 90, of New Matamoras, OH passed away on Monday, September 24, 2018 at Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center in Clarksburg, WV. He was born on August 20, 1928, the son of the late Amon and Iva Izella Barr Dunn.
On December 13, 1946 he entered the military. In 1947 he was stationed in Germany where he took part in the Allied Occupation of that country after WWII. In 1950 he headed for Korea and landed in Yokohama, Japan. Two days after he landed in Inchon, Korea he headed for combat. In the following months, he would fight in some of the worst battles of the war, including the May Massacre, the Battle of Bloody Ridge and the Battle of Heartbreak Ridge. He was discharged on December 9, 1951. He was awarded several medals including the Purple Heart. He never forgot what he went through in Korea.
On October 4, 1950 he married Virginia Lee Morgan of Middlebourne, WV. After 52 years of marriage Virginia preceded him in death on March 8, 2003.
He moved to Cleveland to find work in 1952. In 1956 he moved back home to Grandview and entered the Laborer's Local. He entered the Carpenter's Local 356 in 1965, from which he retired in 1995. He worked on the construction of several bridges and schools in the area.
He also owned and operated Jaguar Root and Fur in Grandview. He was a fur dealer for 28 years. He was also the root dealer for many years. He got a lot of enjoyment out of digging roots and being "The Root Man".
In earlier days he liked to go fishing and coon hunting. He enjoyed watching boxing. He liked getting wood and burning it to heat his home. He got a lot of enjoyment on his morning walk through Grandview and talking to the people he would meet. He also enjoyed sitting on the porch and greeting everyone that passed by. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
He was a member of Matamoras Lodge #374 F.&A.M., American Union Chapter #1 R.A.M., Marietta Council #78 R.&S.M., Marietta Commandery #50 K.T., A.A.S.R. Valley of Cambridge, Aladdin Shrine, life member of V.F.W. Post #5108 in Marietta, Military Order of the Purple Heart, and life member of both the DAV and 24th Inf. Division Association.
Donald is survived by two sons, Donald Dunn, Jr. (Teena) and Daniel Dunn, both of New Matamoras, OH; two grandchildren, Aaron Dunn of Pataskala, OH and Brian Dunn of New Matamoras; three sisters, Doris Meyers, Ruby Hendershot and Beverly Corp. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by nine brothers, Norval Slider, Larry Dean, Wilbur, Melvin, Elvin, Lawrence, Floyd, Dwayne and Carl Dunn.
Funeral services will be held at 2 PM on Thursday, September 27, 2018 at Hadley Funeral Home New Matamoras, 700 Main St., New Matamoras, OH with Rev. Rick Smith officiating. Burial to follow in Matamoras Cemetery with full military honors. Visitation will be held from 2-4 & 6-8 PM on Wednesday, September 26, 2018 at the funeral home, where a Masonic Service will be held at 8 PM.
