Obituary for Mary Frances Hendershot

Mary Frances (Binegar) Hendershot, 83, passed away on February 4, 2017 following an extended illness.
She was born May 23, 1933 at Dart, Ohio, the daughter of Wren Allie and Margaret Vernon (Haught) Binegar. She was a graduate of Lawrence High School at Dart, Ohio in 1951. She loved music, sports and cheerleading. After graduation, she accepted an appointment with the FBI and worked in the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, DC. There she married Richard Irvin Hendershot, and they moved to Virginia where he was stationed during the Korean War. After returning to Marietta, she worked for 35+ years with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, retiring from there in 2002.
She was married to Richard for 58 years, until his death in 2009. They had three children: Debra D. Elliott of Marietta; Richard “Rick” R. Hendershot (Terry) of Whipple; and Steven S. Hendershot, also of Whipple, and five grandchildren, Tiffany (Hendershot) Bailey, Matthew Hendershot, Maggie Hendershot, Lacey Hendershot and Courtney Hendershot. She has one great granddaughter, Samantha Bailey. Other surviving relatives include her sister-in-law, Ethel Hendershot of Marietta, OH, her niece, Sharon (Binegar) Karcher and her former daughter-in-law Tina (Erb) Hendershot. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brother Glenn Binegar and niece Brenda (Binegar) Anderson.
Mary and her husband were avid western-square dancers and members of the Muskingum Valley Twirlers Club. They travelled to various areas to attend dances and made many friends there. She enjoyed camping and travelling, especially to the Kentucky Derby. She was adept at most types of needlework. Mary was Past Matron and Charter Member of Masterton Chapter #584 OES, holding multiple offices including Secretary for many years. She was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Marietta, OH and the Democrat Executive Committee of Washington County.
She was fortunate to have had the love and support of life-long friends, including Bob Emerick of Marietta, and the devotion of her tiny constant companion, “Coco”.
Services will be held at 2 PM on Tuesday, February 7, 2017 at Hadley Funeral Home Reno Chapel, 1021 Pike St., Marietta, OH with burial to follow at East Lawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be held from 4 - 8 PM on Monday, February 6th with an Eastern Star service to be held at 8 PM. Visitation will also be held on Tuesday from 11 AM until the time of service.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Cancer Society, 3901 Briscoe Run Rd # 10, Parkersburg, WV 26104 . The family also would like to thank the Cole Eye Institute at the Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Kelly Cawley and all the staff at Marietta Memorial Hospital and Hospice for their kindness and care.
