Obituary for Carmen Jean Knight

Carmen Jean Burke Knight, 92, of Williamstown passed on February 16, 2018 after a short illness. She was born on July 28, 1925 in Beckley, WV to the late Walter Alexander Burke and Fern Irene Merrill Burke. She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1944 and completed her registered nurses training at Raleigh General Hospital in 1947.
She married Reginald Gordon Knight, the love of her life, on December 22, 1947. They moved to Morgantown, WV where he completed his studies at West Virginia University and she worked as a nurse at Monongalia General Hospital and for Dr. C. Truman Thompson. She and Reginald came to Marietta in 1950 with his employment at Union Carbide and they eventually settled in Williamstown where she raised her family and spent the balance of her life. She continued working as a nurse and later returned to nursing at Marietta Memorial Hospital after spending time as a homemaker.
She is survived by her children, Gary R. Knight (Nancy) of Kennesaw, GA and Janet Knight Wakefield (Jeff) of Charleston, WV. She is also survived by her granddaughter, Lauren Knight (Steven Weaver) and great granddaughter, Meera Rose Weaver of Annapolis, MD. She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.
Carmen possessed a lively personality and left a lasting impression on those she met. Besides enjoying bridge, knitting and movies of all genres, she was in her element when she was sharing stories and entertaining those around her. She will be sorely missed.
As was her wish, there will be no public service. Instead, friends are encouraged to share memories of her as that is exactly how she would want to be honored. Donations may also be made in her memory to the Williamstown Volunteer Fire Department, 411 West 5th St., Williamstown, WV 26187.
